Before we jump into the details regarding the upgrade, we want to share a quick recap on Gitopia Janus Testnet so far and some recent events faced by open-source and Web 3.0 communities that have substantiated the need for a decentralized code collaboration platform.
Gitopia Janus Testnet- The Journey so far
We launched the Gitopia Janus Testnet in April 2022 for the community, giving a sneak peek into what Gitopia is building and start incentivizing community contributions via the Game of $LORE program.
Since the launch of Gitopia Janus Testnet, 43000+ unique addresses have created 54000+ repositories on the platform, helping in testing out the Gitopia Janus testnet and building on the user feedback.
Some projects like TezIndia Foundation and CoinDCX have partnered with Gitopia as their preferred code collaboration platform for their Web 3.0 Hackathons to enable incentivization for the builders building Web 3.0 projects irrespective of the tracks, ecosystem, or language they code in. If you want to enable rewards for participants of your Hackathon, Talk to us!
You can check out the Hackathon repositories on Gitopia here:

The Game of $LORE incentivization mechanism will remain live for the community till the Gitopia Mainnet and will serve as the only way to get your hands on $LORE tokens before Mainnet.
Need for Gitopia in popular open-source and Web 3.0 development culture
Web 3.0 and open-source communities have been victims of the events that affected the entire community. Incidents like
- Suspending accounts of open-source developers linked to sanctioned Russian organizations
- Removing Tornado cash repositories and suspending the accounts of its developers and contributors.
- Launching of the commercial version of GitHub Co-pilot, sparking open-source communities to urge its developers to move to GitHub alternatives.
These are some of the incidents where communities embraced the need for a decentralized code collaboration platform Gitopia is building. Web 3.0 and open-source projects can start hosting a version of their repositories on Gitopia and take the benefit of permanent storage, censorship-resistant collaboration, contribution rewards, and much more.
What’s new on Gitopia with this upgrade?
This upgrade is important as it marks the first step towards launching the Gitopia Mainnet. Key Highlighting features of this upgrade are:
1. The onboarding of the initial set of validators to Gitopia
With the launch of Gitopia Janus Testnet, we rolled out a validator pre-interest form to accept applications from the validator community interested in validating the Gitopia blockchain. We have received around 2200 requests from validators across the ecosystem via the form, and we want to thank the entire validator community for their love!
We have sent shortlisting emails to validators from the list based on the factors such as past validation experience, network uptime on other blockchains, etc., to name a few. The shortlisted validators can start running the Gitopia node immediately!
Steps for the shortlisted validator teams
- TLORE balance have already been sent to the Gitopia addresses submitted to us by the validator teams via email.
- Follow the steps in the docs to run your Gitopia node: https://docs.gitopia.com/validator-setup
- You can find genesis and seed here
2. Introducing permanent storage for your Git repositories
All open-source repositories created on Gitopia now have their permanent and safe home on the blockchain without fearing unfair censorship. We have strengthened our storage by backing the repositories on Filecoin and pinning it to IPFS. Also, verified repositories will be backed up on Arweave. This will ensure permanent and uninterrupted data availability for your repositories on Gitopia.
You can verify the IPFS cids and Arweave transaction ids for your repository on the Gitopia platform. You can also clone these repositories directly from IPFS and Arweave.
3. Introducing Gitopia Profiles
The Gitopia profiles provide an enhanced user profile view and also provides users with ability to set unique Gitopia usernames.
Set your unique Gitopia usernames: Users can now set human-readable names for their wallet addresses on Gitopia. The username will be unique and verifiable on the Gitopia blockchain. Reserve your username now!
New profile view: With the upgrade, the user section on Gitopia got a new look. You can now view your latest repositories, contribution history, latest transactions, etc., directly from your profile tab.
4. DAO Profile and Dashboard
Gitopia DAO provides a unique, censorship-resistant, and permanent identity for your Opensource and Web 3.0 projects on the blockchain.
DAO profile is a public social page for your DAOs on Gitopia. DAO profiles help give a detailed overview of your projects to contributors and help them stay up to date with the latest developments in your projects.
Each DAO profile consists of
- A unique Web 3.0 identity for your Opensource projects: A unique human-readable DAO name registered on the Gitopia blockchain against your DAO address, providing a Web 3.0 identity for your Open-source project.
- Social Share link: All projects on Gitopia will now have a unique slug to share on social media. All details related to your projects are now available on gitopia.com/yourDAOname.
- Description of your project: You can set your project logo and add a brief description of your project with essential links for the contributors to access quickly.
- Overview: This section provides your contributors with access to the latest development on your project by providing information about the repositories with recent commits.
- Repositories: This section provides the list of all the repositories in your DAO.
- People: This section provides information regarding all the collaborators and their roles in the DAO.
DAO Dashboard acts as a control center for managing the DAO created on Gitopia. Currently, you can add collaborators, add new repositories and provide authorizations specific to your DAO from here. More DAO-specific features will be added in future upgrades. If you want to suggest any feature to be added to the DAO, you can let us know by raising an issue on the Gitopia repository or by posting your feature request on Discord.
5. Performance Improvements and Bug Fixes
Along with the features mentioned above, there have been a lot of performance improvements and bug fixes made to make Gitopia smooth and faster for Opensource and Web 3.0 communities. Some of the notable changes include:
